Description: HI318 U.S. Intellectual and Cultural History Since 1859. 3 hours. A study of the cultural achievements of America from 1859 to the present. Writers, events and themes examined in-clude jazz music, Mark Twain, Hollywood filmmaking, the Scopes "Monkey" trial, Hemingway, William and Henry James, and the counterculture of the 1960s. From environmentalism to pragmatism, from fundamentalism to postmodernism, the student will receive a guided tour through the major contours of modern thought. At the same time, the class will place these developments within a larger world context.
